and reviewed byThe Iranian film-maker Jafar Panahi has been arrested, along with his wife and daughter, while taking part in an opposition rally to pay tribute to those demonstrators killed during the repression that followed the disputed presidential election of June 12.
A former assistant to Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi won the Golden Lion at the 2000 Venice Film Festival for The Circle and the Silver Bear at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival for Offside. In a statement, the French Society of Film Directors (Société française de réalisateurs de films, SRF) said that, “although regularly censored in his home country, his work makes him one of the most important Iranian directors”. The SRF “asks that the French Government, and in particular the Ministry of Culture, do everything” to ensure the film-maker’s release. The Minister for Culture Frédéric Mitterrand has called for Tehran to free Mr Panahi.
