This Monday Daniel Cohn-Bendit announced that he would not attend the Europe Ecologie/Les Verts congress, which takes place in La Rochelle from Friday to Sunday. His message on the site of the Nouvel Observateur was posted following the rejection of his motion in a vote of activists on Sunday.
"I won’t be there," revealed the founder of Europe Ecologie, recognising a "failure" after his motion obtained 26.55% of the vote on Sunday when activists met in decentralised congresses. The list of the outgoing national secretary, Cécile Duflot, received a majority with 50.25%, according to definitive results circulated on Monday, and is sure to be re-elected as head of the group on Saturday.
It is "a defeat for everyone. There was 56% abstention, not counting proxy votes. Two-thirds of those who participated are former Greens," laments Cohn-Bendit, who is co-president of the Greens in the European Parliament. "Our defeat is, for us, having been unable to mobilise beyond a limited circle of supporters. But aren’t I a little naive in wanting to make a different political party? For me, in any case, the ’party’ phase is finished! I am on the European level, full stop, end of paragraph," he concludes.
Through this internal campaign, Daniel Cohn-Bendit intended to develop his "cooperative", autonomous with respect to the party, for supporters who are non-members. He also wanted to "de-bureaucratise" the movement, which is, according to him, "not measuring up to the hopes" born at the 2009 European elections, when there were 15,000 members.
