SNCF Rail Worker Unions Fear Layoffs in 2015 Budget

Translated Friday 9 January 2015, by Gene Zbikowski

The voices of several rail worker unions were raised in opposition to the SNCF’s 2015 budget, according to the AFP.

The 2015 budget will be presented to the central works council (CCE) on Jan. 7 before being submitted to the board of administration on Jan. 8. This will be the SNCF’s first budget following the rail reform. The reform re-united the SNCF with the Réseau ferré de France (the Rail Network of France), which has managed the rail network and which has been separated from the SNCF since 1997.

According to the rail worker unions, a thousand jobs could be lost in 2015, whereas the corporation is simultaneously proclaiming its ambition to improve user service. In the new organization, SNCF Mobilités, the train operator, is to lose more jobs in 2015 than will be created at SNCF Réseau, which will be responsible for the infrastructure. In this context, the CGT rail workers union is calling a demonstration in Paris on Jan. 29 against the rail reform, which it holds responsible for the fall in staff levels and the rise in fares and rates.
