Germany: Martin Schulz Attacks Angela Merkel

Translated Thursday 15 January 2015, by Gene Zbikowski

Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, accused Chancellor Angela Merkel of “irresponsible speculation” on Jan. 7.

Martin Schulz accused Angela Merkel of “irresponsible speculation” regarding a possible Greek exit from the euro zone if the radical left wins the elections in Athens in late January. “The irresponsible speculation and debate on scenarios of a Greek exit from the euro zone really are no help,” the German Social-Democrat underlined in the daily newspaper Die Welt. “Unsolicited advice that gives people in Greece the feeling that they’re not the ones who, by their vote, are deciding on their future, but rather Brussels or Berlin, may even push voters into the arms of radical forces,” he pointed out. Talk of a possible Greek exit from the euro has been rife since the German weekly Der Spiegel stated on the weekend of Jan. 3-4 that Angela Merkel is ready to let Greece leave the euro zone if the radical left, Syriza, wins.
