The emergency doctor and Charlie Hebdo journalist explains his support for Left Front candidates.
Why are you supporting the Left Front candidates in the departmental elections in Lille?
Patrick Pelloux They are friends who have been fighting in this arena for a long time. Even if they are not going to change the world, Sunday, the change will start at a local level. The terrorist activities which hit France, then Denmark and now Tunisia, spur us into making changes, to fight and support those who defend left wing values, culture and therefore, secularity. Those fighting against the social crisis. How many years have we talked of a crisis? Economists keep serving up the same recipe, always giving the same result, blaming industry, the workers. In the style of a doctor who reproaches the patient for being responsible for their illness.
A record abstention reported, the FN pushed to the fore and gaining confidence, two months after the attacks and the Republican marches of 11 January, how do you deal with this situation?
Patrick Pelloux We must stop deluding ourselves over the FN. The last scandal at the European parliament (where twenty parliamentary assistants were accused of mainly working for Marine le Pen’s party at parliamentary expense, not dealing with European issues) shows how much it is part of the system. The FN is a fake: wherever it is elected, it narrow-mindedly pours scorn on society, particularly on the working classes it promises to defend. A far-removed vision from that of an equal Republic. Abstention is a danger for democracy and the Republic. There is a kind of pretence on the part of those who do not vote; they undoubtedly think the right to vote is unavoidable, guaranteed? They undoubtedly hold the sentiment that society is never threatened? Well, the wave of terrorism around the world is an attack against democracy. I am for compulsory voting but one has to take into account the blank vote.
