Arbitrary arrest: explain yourself Mr Cazeneuve!

Translated Friday 10 July 2015, by Adrian Jordan

Pierre Stambul, co-president of the French Jewish Union for Peace, was violently arrested in a raid – like a common terrorist.

Excuses and explanations are the least that can be expected of the interior minister. Bernard Cazeneuve must clarify the appalling events which took place on Monday night at the Marseille home of Pierre Stambul. The co-president of the French Jewish Union for Peace (UJFP) was hit on the chin, pinned to the ground and handcuffed by agents of... RAID! [1] Why this heavy-handed intervention by the anti-terrorist police when facing this son of a holocaust deportee and survivor of the Manouchian group; known for his pacifist involvement in the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? While awaiting the official response, Pierre Stambul, who joined us by telephone, castigated “the incompetence” of RAID and the police recalling that this is “the fourth attack of this kind” suffered by activists and pacifist politicians, one of whom being the other co-president of the UJPF, Jean-Guy Greilsamer. The supposed target should have been Ulcan, French-Israeli hacker and extreme right wing Zionist member of the Jewish Defense League (JDL), a violent group, banned in Israel, yet still active in France despite being officially banned by Bernard Cazeneuve last summer! Pierre Stambul recounts that RAID burst in on the pretext that he was in the act of killing his wife! Since when have anti-terrorist police intervened in this kind of case? Pierre Stambul was then assaulted while his wife, Sarah, was at his side! The police then took over. He waited three hours before being interviewed and then another three long hours before finally being released! Pierre Stambul states that the aggression to which he was victim was linked to the “hysterical campaign of the Zionist extreme right against the BDS” (Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions) against the state of Israel. The League des Droits de l’Homme and the Association France Palestine Solidarité immediately denounced the “criminalisation of an activist” and “blind security measures”. Pierre Stambul decided to complain. Excuses and explanations then, instead of respect for the rights and liberties of the French Republic!

[1RAID (Research, Assistance, Intervention, Deterrence), alongside the GIPN, is a special tactical unit of the Police Nationale, similar to the GIGN of the Gendarmerie. Nationale. Its remit is primarily that of anti-terrorism but it does have other intervention roles.
