The US Army in Europe

Translated Tuesday 10 April 2007, by Victoria Santiago

The United States European Command (EUCOM) is the commanding structure of the US army in Europe, although its zone of influence also includes Turkey, almost the whole of Africa and the ex Soviet Union. In response to the aftermath created by the end the cold war and the 9/11 attacks, EUCOM has been undergoing a reform which should reduce its military personnel from 315,000 scattered among 1,421 installations at the end of the 1990s, to 67,000 people working in 295 installations. The number of bases in Western Europe will be reduced and shifted to Eastern Europe and to the Southern Hemisphere.

In 2005, EUCOM was composed of:

* 112,000 military personel in 491 installations;

* 73,500 in Germany;

* 11,700 in Italy;

* 9,900 in the United Kingdom;

* 2,000 in Spain;

* 1,700 in Turkey;

* 950 in Belgium;

* 800 in The Netherlands.
